Surfboard dimensions

A surfboard is described by three numbers and a volume: length in feet and inches, width and thickness in inches, and litres. Lengths run from 5'4" on a short fish to 10'0" on a longboard, thickness from 1¾" to 3¾", and width sits between 21 and 30 % of the length depending on the type.

How to read the dimensions

A board is always listed in the same order: length × width × thickness, then the volume. A 6'0" × 19 ¼" × 2 ½" · 30 L is a board six feet long, nineteen and a quarter inches across at its widest point, two and a half inches thick at its thickest, and thirty litres of volume.

Length comes in feet and inches while the other two are inches only, inherited from the American industry. Even if you think in centimetres, the whole market speaks this way and translating it helps nobody. Width is measured at the widest point of the outline and thickness at the centre of the deck, where the board is fullest.

Of those four figures, the one that describes the board is the volume. The other three are how you arrive at that volume, and two boards of the same length can be six litres apart depending on how they distribute width and thickness.

How long is a surfboard

It depends on the type, and the full range runs from 5'4" to 10'0". A shortboard sits between 5'6" and 7'0", a fish between 5'4" and 6'8", a hybrid between 5'6" and 6'5", a mid-length between 6'6" and 8'0", a softboard between 7'0" and 8'6", a gun between 7'0" and 9'6" and a longboard between 8'6" and 10'0".

The most common length for an everyday board for an adult of average level is between 6'0" and 6'6". Below 5'8" you are in the territory of people who surf daily and weigh little, and above 7'0" the board stops turning in the small space a small wave gives you.

Length is the dimension people ask for most and the one that decides least. It does two things: it lets you fit on the board while paddling, and it matches the curve to the size of wave. What actually tunes flotation is width and thickness, and those come out of the volume you need.

The longboard row is flat at 9'0" because its length is set by how you surf it, not by your height. The softboard tops out at 8'6" above 6'1": past that, volume comes from width and thickness rather than length.

Ranges, widths and fill factor

Every board type lives inside a range, and stepping outside it stops being that board. A 6'8" fish is no longer a fish, it is something else that paddles strangely. That is why the calculator, when the volume you need does not fit the shape you asked for, first stretches the board within its own range and only then switches shape, instead of handing you impossible dimensions.

Width is expressed as a percentage of length. The fill factor is the fraction of the length × width × thickness box the board actually occupies: a fish fills 0.53 and a longboard 0.61, which is why two boards of the same length can float completely differently.

How volume becomes dimensions

Board volume is not length times width times thickness: that would be a brick. It is that box multiplied by a fill factor that captures how close the real shape gets to it, running from 0.52 on a finely foiled gun to 0.61 on a longboard. With the target volume and each shape's fill factor you solve for width and thickness, and that is what you see in the calculator result.
