Surfboard for expert level
At expert level the range drops to 28-35 per cent of body weight: 22 to 28 litres at 176 lb (80 kg). Watch out if you are light: below 18 litres there is no commercial board, so the linear calculation stops being useful there.
Expert is not an ego label: it means surfing at a high level consistently, with the frequency that requires. Volume is the minimum that still lets you paddle enough, because anything spare takes away control.
At this level the number a calculator gives you is the starting point for a conversation with a shaper, not a specification. What decides the board is rocker, foil and the particular wave at your spot.
| weight | Small and soft | A bit of everything | With wall and power | Big and hollow |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 110 lb | 18 L Fish | 18 L Shortboard | 18 L Shortboard | 21 L Gun |
| 132 lb | 20 L Fish | 19 L Shortboard | 18 L Shortboard | 25 L Gun |
| 154 lb | 24 L Fish | 22 L Shortboard | 21 L Shortboard | 29 L Gun |
| 176 lb | 27 L Fish | 25 L Shortboard | 24 L Shortboard | 34 L Gun |
| 198 lb | 31 L Fish | 28 L Shortboard | 27 L Shortboard | 38 L Gun |
| 220 lb | 34 L Fish | 32 L Shortboard | 30 L Shortboard | 42 L Gun |
Each cell is the recommended volume and the shape that goes with that weight in those waves. It comes from the same function that answers in the calculator, at average frequency and age 30.
The typical mistake at this level
Dropping litres to look like a better surfer. If you stop catching waves, you are not surfing better: you are surfing less.
When to move on
From here the adjustment is not about level, it is about season and wave. Two or three boards three litres apart cover the year.
