Surfboard for intermediate level
An intermediate needs 42 to 52 per cent of body weight in litres: 34 to 42 litres at 176 lb (80 kg). Where exactly you land inside that band is decided by the wave, and the default shape is a hybrid, or a fish if your days are small.
Intermediate means you surf consistently: you make what you paddle for, you do basic turns and you read where the wave will break. It is also the level where volume stops being a single figure and becomes a range that moves with conditions, because you can now feel the difference.
This is where published sources disagree most, with figures from 32 to 66 litres for the same 176 lb surfer. This calculator's calibrated band is 34 to 42, and the reasoning is on the method page.
| weight | Small and soft | A bit of everything | With wall and power | Big and hollow |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 110 lb | 25 L Fish | 24 L Hybrid | 23 L Hybrid | 31 L Gun |
| 132 lb | 30 L Fish | 28 L Hybrid | 27 L Hybrid | 37 L Gun |
| 154 lb | 35 L Fish | 33 L Hybrid | 32 L Hybrid | 44 L Gun |
| 176 lb | 40 L Fish | 38 L Hybrid | 36 L Hybrid | 50 L Gun |
| 198 lb | 45 L Fish | 42 L Hybrid | 41 L Hybrid | 56 L Gun |
| 220 lb | 51 L Fish | 47 L Hybrid | 45 L Hybrid | 62 L Gun |
Each cell is the recommended volume and the shape that goes with that weight in those waves. It comes from the same function that answers in the calculator, at average frequency and age 30.
The typical mistake at this level
Owning one board and choosing it for the best day of the year. If your spot delivers weak surf three weekends out of four, the board has to be sized for those three.
When to move on
Once you link turns across conditions and want response more than ease, the range drops to 36-44 per cent and the natural shape becomes a shortboard.
